So you want to be a DJ?
We all have delusions of grandeur but you can make becoming a DJ a reality.
There are all sorts of equipment out there to help you on your way. You can buy the decks and the mixing consoles and of course, some meaty speakers. You will need DJ headphones with the swivel earpiece. You can get microphones and keyboards and then you’re well on the way to making your own music.
It’s worth reading reviews on the equipment so that you get exactly what you want within your budget. Once you’re kitted out the fun really begins.
Being a DJ is far more than just playing records, you have to have some talent too! You need to be able to cross fade the music from one disc to another using twin DJ Equipment Decks and the essential headphones. You need to be able to capture the mood of the audience and play the music with a smooth flow that interprets what the crowd are doing and get them going or slow things down. You need a vast array of music on vinyl and CD.
You will need to practice to get it right. You have to be able to mix records so that you can’t see the joins, listen to the beat of the first and choose another record with the same beat to mix into it. As you do this you need to use the mixer console to fade one in and one out. Once you’ve mastered mixing two together then continue adding more until you get a good flow over several records. This is going to take a bit of practice but once you’ve got the hang of vinyl you can then start adding CD’s to the mix.
Once you know what you’re doing with the equipment then it’s time to put together a set. To do this you really need to know your music well and know what goes with what. You need to set a pace that suits your audience, gradually building it up then bringing it back down to give them a break, then building it up again.
If you’ve watched a professional DJ and thought ‘that’s easy’ then be assured it isn’t. You need to have great dexterity, know your music and have the confidence to bring it all together. Most of all you need to love doing it and love your music.
