New Day Has Come is the latest Pop CD released by the extremely talented Celine Dion who once again has delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I’m confident Celine Dion fans, and Pop fans alike will be pleased with this one.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Pop music fans will recognize some of the well known guests that have been assembled to play along with Dion on several of the tracks. Artists like Michael Thompson and Paul Jackson Jr. just to name a couple.

Overall New Day Has Come is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Pop collection. Truly an outstanding Pop CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While this entire album is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 3 – Have You Ever Been In Love, track 14 – When The Wrong One Loves You Right, and track 16 – Nature Boy.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – I’m Alive. This is a great track!

SOT New Single Reviewed

There aren’t any chart topping cameos on the new debut single ‘Hookah Baby’ from Denver, Colo., hip-hop experimentalists Strange Orange Tongue. However, music’s greatest innovators never get noticed right away. ‘Hookah Baby’ is a true grunge hip hop team-up; the single gives a glimpse perhaps into what hip hop mystery will arrive with the full length release, ‘The Lift’, later this year. So what’s all the hub bub about Strange Orange Tongue? No pun intended but it’s a matter of taste; which could be the reason for the band name (Strange Orange Tongue). For those that don’t know the band better known as simply S.O.T., then let me just say their somewhere between the Audio Bullys and Modeselektor. Like most of their music, it’s hard for me to tell whether this track is light or dark, perhaps ingeniously on purpose. Clearly the “Hookah Baby” is not a hookah at all, so what is it?

Hookah Baby is filled with beligerant honesty and underscored with a message about the political climate “Gaza an appeasement needs…” and cheeky allusions to “..a jug of Kool Aid that’s spiked with some booze”. At other times the lyrics are vague enough that you wonder, “well maybe he is talking about a baby hookah or a hookah baby”. Somehow the song seems rather cohesive considering one minute your talking about fountains in SoHo and MySpace followed with a mention of “Apple” being “like poison in the land of parades…”. On the Strange Orange Tongue website, the Hookah Baby ‘Apple’ lyric is with a capital ‘A’. Is it a reference to the hardware manufacturer? Either the band is deft at clever tricks or there’s truly a deeper artistic expression. Either way, it’s only the first song off the debut album so time will tell. Their antics have always kept me interested since their bootlegs were leaked a long time ago, but you’d have to think that any fans they once had would have moved on by now…right?

In regards to sound, the song revisits an old school Cypress Hill feel with the squiggly guitar background and marching tempo. The Hookah Baby dry drum sound makes the lyrics echo in a more perverted way and the odd spoken range lends to the droll impression left by vocalist Nic Rio. You feel that he may be doing more explaining to you or reminiscing than rapping. Some may wonder if Strange Orange Tongue has gone soft in favor of more mainstream topics than the typical “Silver Dollar Nips” attitude of the past. It will be interesting to see if they are overlooked as sketchy geniuses like MF Grimm or if they’ll receive kudos from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. I’m sure it will be worth checking out in December. Once again, time will tell.

The song was scheduled for release on October 28.

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Soundtrack To Your Escape gets. Soundtrack To Your Escape stated simply is one of their best CDs to date.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

These days it’s a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs.

Overall Soundtrack To Your Escape is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Rock collection. Truly an outstanding Rock CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

Polarising is what copyright infringers, fan-bottlers and surly bastards Crystal Castles do best. So it was only a matter of time before they polarised themselves. Recorded in a church in Iceland, a garage in Detroit and a log cabin in Ontario, it seems disparate environments have seeped into the bipolar sounds of their second album. The moments of calm beauty that studded their debut are more frequent, while the digipunk shriekfests are harder, colder and scarier.

Whereas tracks like ‘Magic Spells’ felt like brief pauses for breath between fits of rage, here CC attain a more contemplative space, leading us to suspect the leather-clad enfants terrible may have souls that crave saving. ‘Baptism’ remembers the essential link between hands-in-the-air rave and hands-together church music, Messiah Chorus-layered synths raising praise to the heavens while evil Alice dances a squealing sacrilege across the altar. Or take single ‘Celestica’, whose naked, unashamed gym-trance rush (Radio 1 playlisted, ye gods) borrows a trick from Delerium’s ‘Silence’, Alice singing (yes, really) softly, “Do you pray with your eyes closed… When it’s cold outside, hold me tight, hold me”.

Not that Crystal Castles have found chillout, or anything. For every moment of beatification, there’s another where they throw the listener into the pit. ‘Doe Deer’ is distilled CC; that serrated ground-Glass shriek, the itchy, nervy beats, the nagging riff. It makes you want to fight, fuck or flee, to jump on the nearest table and start ape-grimacing and throwing things, possibly your own faeces. ‘Fainting Spells’ opens the album with a scratchy nest of hisses and gasps, fear inducing, panic attack-y, like a last fuzzily recorded plea for help.

What’s to become of CC’s restless souls, forever torn between frenzy and transcendence? Standout ‘Empathy’ finds a balance, an edgily rippling electro pulse and Knife-ish distorted vocals soothed by amniotic synths and Alice’s cooed promises of “synergy” and “symmetry”. It’s closer ‘I Am Made Of Chalk’, though, that really knits the two sides of their being. Alice sounds like a dolphin trapped in a car-crusher below Orbital-like heavenly washes of fuzzy brightness; a muddy and malformed creature in supplication to some celestial power.

It’s a late resolution; like their debut, ‘Crystal Castles’ feels long; not too long for comfort but too long for coherence. An album that erred definitely to one side or the other (or that left off pleasant but inessential tracks such as ‘Not In Love’) would be a clearer statement. But that’s Crystal Castles; awkward, intractable, occasionally brilliant, always human.

Three solemn shapes loom in the distance. Three unblinking statues, stern and merciless, who create a terrifying racket that simultaneously frazzles the nerves and slackens the bowels. For want of an easy moniker, you’d label it post industrial, but it moves beyond that; this is post-apocalyptic, the soundtrack of an underworld disco.

But even if Factory Floor revel in producing noise at its most primitive – an incessant drone of keyboards wired through twisted-metal synthesizers and thundering drums summoned from the heavens – ‘Untitled’ is not just a hollow shell of ferocious sound. Featuring just four tracks (and a DVD, Solid Sound, a film and soundtrack made by the band, whose Rorschach-style shifting shapes aptly fits their desolate sonic landscape) that span over 40 minutes, at its core is a bleakness that serves as the final point of a dystopian triangle begun earlier this year by These New Puritans’ ‘Hidden’ and Liars’ ‘Sisterworld’. There’s a palpable sense of nihilism throughout, evidenced by the harsh, grating lines of ‘16-2-16-9 20-1-14-9-7’, which stretch out over 10 taut minutes. ‘A Wooden Box’, meanwhile, is an intersection of relentlessly marching keyboards and metallic clanging, over which Dom Butler repeats: “We won’t need a gold chain/We just want a wooden box/Dig a hole in the ground/ Throw us in and let us rot”.

Fight through the gloom, though, and you discover what makes Factory Floor truly special. Unlike the discordant shrieking of lesser noise bands, there’s a driving pulse thundering away throughout ‘Untitled’, compelling the listener’s limbs into motion. ‘Lyin’’ is built around a hammering metronomic beat that never ceases, providing the perfect devilish backdrop for Nik Void’s haunting proclamation of “Four in a room/Five in a room”. Factory Floor never stop; they never clock off; their labour is neverending.

The Futureheads are a bit like the art-pop Heinz beans; despite the occasional professed new and improved recipe they’ll always reliably and essentially remain the same. You might stray over to a newer, seemingly more exciting pulse, but you’ll always end up crawling back because there’s no beating a bit of spiky, saucy familiarity.

From the outset then, ‘The Chaos’ is undeniably a vintage ’Heads album, its “Five, four, three, two, one… GO” opening gambit recalling the teetering anticipation that begins ‘Man Ray’, wrapped around a ‘The Beginning Of The Twist’-esque driving guitar romp underscored by a slightly wobbly, off-kilter discordance. So, basically all the good bits of their previous three efforts distilled into one song. ‘The Baron’, too, treads a similar path, the post punk clatter at its core as comfortingly recognisable as a favourite nook in the sofa but with enough XTC-ish oddball tinges to keep the interest sparked, while single ‘Heartbeat Song’ flashes by in two-and-a-half minutes of no-nonsense Mackem indie-punk.

It’s with the surprisingly bleak ‘Sun Goes Down’, however, that the album’s dramatic title finally starts to click into place. Yes, the spiky edges and distinguishable vocals are still present, but, as the recognisable jerk-and-thrash chorus descends there’s a myriad of tormented howls that’d give Lars Von Trier the willies. It’s a hint of… well, chaos, that shows a different side to Sunderland’s most lovable.

Maybe it’s the continued freedom that comes with being your own boss (as with 2008’s ‘This Is Not The World’, ‘The Chaos’ is issued on their own label, Nul Records), or maybe it’s a delayed reaction to their reported near-split a few years back, but there’s certainly something up because ‘Jupiter’’s opening harmonics are as mad as a box of frogs. If Queen had relocated up north to pen ditties about the solar system, you’d be vaguely close to its sound. The fact that, as quickly as they appeared, the vocal anomalies are replaced by a choppy guitar lick makes it all the more bizarre, like some kind of bemusing hallucination.

Though The Futureheads’ established formula still sticks steadfast, there are enough wild cards peppered throughout to prove that, far from stuck in a rut, they’re still moving playfully forward. This is chaos you can revel in.
